What Is an Escape Room? A First-Timer’s Guide

Updated September 2026.

An escape room is a live, story-driven game where your group enters a themed environment and works together to complete a mission before time runs out.

Despite the name, the goal is not always literally to escape through a locked door. Depending on the story, you might be recovering an artifact, stopping a villain, completing a secret mission, or surviving an experiment. The common thread is that the room gives your team information, objects, puzzles, and challenges that you have to connect.

What do you actually do in an escape room?

Most teams spend the game doing a mix of four things:

  • searching the environment for useful clues;
  • recognizing patterns and connections;
  • solving puzzles or completing interactive challenges;
  • communicating discoveries with the rest of the group.

You do not need special knowledge before you arrive. A good escape room gives you the information you need inside the experience. Paying attention, sharing what you find, and trying ideas as a team matter more than arriving with a particular skill set.

How does an escape room begin?

Before the game starts, staff explains the basics you need to know. That usually includes the objective, game rules, and any room-specific information.

At Trapped! Las Vegas, all current escape-room bookings are private. Your group gets the room to itself instead of being combined with strangers.

Once the game begins, the story and environment take over. Some rooms move in a mostly linear direction, while others let different people work on several challenges at the same time.

What happens if you get stuck?

Getting stuck is normal.

At Trapped!, hints are available when requested. A hint is not a failure. It is a tool for keeping the experience moving when your group has exhausted its current ideas.

The best teams usually communicate before asking for help: make sure everyone knows what has been found, what has already been solved, and what is still unexplained. Our escape room tips go into more detail.

Are escape rooms scary?

Not necessarily.

Most Trapped! Las Vegas rooms are not horror experiences. One Eyed Jack is the darker exception and includes horror elements, so it is recommended for older teens and adults.

Theme, intensity, and player limits vary by room. Check the individual experience page before booking if anyone in your group is sensitive to darkness, effects, suspense, or a particular theme.

Do I need a big group?

No. Group minimums depend on the room.

At Trapped! Las Vegas, Pandora’s Box and One Eyed Jack currently allow groups of two. Other current rooms begin at three players. Every booking remains private regardless of group size.

A smaller team means everyone will probably handle more of the puzzle workload. A larger team gives you more people to search, communicate, and divide tasks.

What should a first-time player expect?

Expect to be confused sometimes. Expect to miss something obvious. Expect someone else in your group to notice something you did not.

That is part of the game.

The goal is not to prove who is smartest. The best experience comes from exploring the environment, talking to each other, asking for help when you need it, and letting the story unfold without spoilers. For a step-by-step picture of the visit itself, see what happens at an escape room.
